Gwiazdka

Once upon a time, in a far-off galaxy, a mysterious lady named Læ lived amongst the stars. She was a kind and gentle being, and she loved nothing more than to gaze down upon the earth and watch the people going about their lives.

On one particular Christmas Eve, Læ decided to visit the earth herself. She flew down through the atmosphere, her long, flowing hair streaming behind her like a comet's tail. She landed in a small town and walked amongst the people, marveling at the Christmas lights and decorations that adorned the streets.

As she walked, she came across a group of children who were singing Christmas carols. Læ joined in, her sweet, ethereal voice adding to the harmony of the song. The children were enchanted by her, and they begged her to stay with them for the holiday. They called her Gwiazdka (gvee-yaz-dkah), name that can be translated as a ‘Little Star’ or a ‘Star-Woman’.

Læ agreed to stay, and she spent the next few days playing with the children, helping them decorate their Christmas tree. She even taught them some of the songs and dances of her home among the stars.

On Christmas morning, the children woke up to find that Læ had left them a gift - a shining star that they could hang on their tree. The star glowed with a warm, gentle light, and it filled the children's hearts with joy.

And so, Læ the lady from the stars brought a touch of magic to the earth on that Christmas Day, and the memory of her kindness and beauty lived on in the hearts of the children she met.

That was the beginning of the tradition of waiting for the ‘First Star’ (Pierwsza Gwiazdka) to appear on the sky before dining on the Christmas Eve. On that evening the people, usually children, are carefully observing the sky, looking for the first star to shine. When it appears, it is a sign for the family that the celebrations might get started and they might already sit by the Christmas table to dine.
